The New York Yankees have to be disappointed to say the least. They survived a very difficult struggle to win the American League East. Then, they had to take on the Baltimore Orioles, and even though that series went down to the wire, they ended up pulling out the victory in the end behind a strong performance from CC Sabathia.
Then, they met the Detroit Tigers. Things are not necessarily go to the way the Yankees must have hoped. They were outscored 19-6 and the American League Championship Series, and even though they kept a few of the games close, they never led at any point in any game throughout the entire series.
That is not the way you want to end the season, and you have to wonder what the New York Yankees will be planning for this winter to make sure that this type of thing does not happen again.
One interesting rumor that has been circulating is trading Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez had a very difficult season when he only hit .272 with 18 home runs and 57 RBI. While he has those numbers are not that awful, when you’re one of the most well paid players in baseball, there is a lot more pressure to perform. Also, he did not play well at all during the playoff run, so that added to the frustration level.
While there are rumors around the trade, nothing seems to be particularly imminent. It would be nice for the Yankees to be able to shed that payroll and reinvest the money in a way that provides a better return, but it will be hard to find someone to take on all of that money.
Of course, it would not be surprising to see the Yankees active in the free agent market. In general, when this team has problems, they go out and spend more money because they have it to spend. Nick Swisher and Ichiro Suzuki are both going to be free agents, so there should be an open outfield position. Of course, either one of these men could probably be brought back, but on the open market, you never know what might happen. Also, Swisher did not endear himself to fans by playing below-average baseball in this playoff run.
The New York Yankees are the winningest franchise in baseball history, and there is a limited tolerance for anything less than the World Series. You can be sure that things are going to happen this winter.
